Project: monitor-energie.ro

A public dashboard for Romania's energy system.

A live control panel built in the public interest. One place to see how Romania produces, consumes, trades and prices electricity, updated every minute from public data.

Why we built it

A clear overview, made for everyone.

We want to offer an overall picture of Romania’s energy system that anyone can read: where the power comes from, where it goes and what it costs. It is not perfect. This is the first version, and we keep updating it.

Public interest
Free to use, with no accounts and no personal data collected. The charts can be embedded and reused with attribution.
First version
Not perfect, and continuously improving. New views, sources and corrections are added as we go.
Open to contributions
Anyone can contribute ideas or advice to improve it. We are open to feedback from specialists and the public alike.
Measured vs. estimated
Every chart separates what comes straight from the source from what we calculate. Estimates are labelled as such.
Data sources

Every number comes from a public source.

The site produces no data of its own. It collects the public snapshot of the National Energy System every minute, archives it, and places it next to weather and hydrology data to answer questions the raw figure cannot.

Measured · every minute
Transelectrica operational feed
Consumption, production, balance, breakdown by source and flows on every interconnection with Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Moldova and Ukraine.
Measured · 15 minutes
Transelectrica DAMAS reports
Imbalance prices, balancing energy, forecast vs. actual consumption and cross-border capacities, since June 2024.
Measured · daily
ENTSO-E Transparency Platform
Day-ahead prices for Romania and 27 European bidding zones. Also the backup for live data when the operator feed is down.
Measured · hourly
Open-Meteo & ERA5
Temperature weighted by population, solar radiation weighted by installed PV, and wind at 100 m over Dobrogea and southern Moldova.
Modelled · daily
GloFAS
River discharge on the Danube at the Iron Gates and on the inland rivers that feed Romania’s hydropower plants.
Forecast algorithm

A 7-day renewable forecast, learned from our own archive.

Transelectrica does not publish a forecast by source, so we build our own. It combines public weather forecasts for the places where the parks actually are with the relationship between weather and output learned from the archive. New parks show up in the data on their own.

Solar
Clear-sky ceiling
For every month–hour pair, the highest output in the archive sets the ceiling. Forecast cloud cover lowers it by up to 72% under full overcast.
Wind
National power curve
Average observed output for every 2 km/h step of wind speed, for the whole national fleet, including stopped turbines.
Hydro
Weekly rhythm
River flow caps hydro output rather than determining it. We use the recent average and the weekly pattern read from the archive.
Look-back
One year of history
The model learns the shape of the relationship from the past year, so each month is compared with the same month last year.
Correction
Last two weeks
Actual vs. predicted output over the last 14 days rescales the model, bounded between 0.6 and 1.8 so one odd week cannot skew it.
Limits
What to trust
A single day can be far off, especially toward the end of the range. The order of magnitude and the direction are what hold.
Our own calculations

Estimates, with the method written out.

Some figures exist in no public source, so we derive them and publish exactly how, so anyone can check or challenge them.

Estimate
Fuel burned and CO₂
Derived from energy produced, plant efficiency and fuel calorific value, with IPCC emission factors. Can be off by 20–30%.
Estimate
Industry vs. households
A decomposition of the consumption curve, comparing midweek and Sunday night floors. Shown as a range, not a single line.
Calculated
Capacity factor
Reference capacity comes from the highest peak in our own archive, so it refers to the same plants the operator feed measures.
Calculated
Interconnection load
Scheduled exchange divided by available capacity, per direction. A border counts as full above 90%.
Open to ideas

Help us make it better.

If you spot a figure that does not match an official source, have better data on Romania’s energy fleet, or an idea for a new view, write to us. The assumptions are adjustable and we correct them.
